I seem to receive an awful lot of emails like the one below, which I thought I’d share with you. Don’t get me wrong, I love social media and at Thinkbox we bang on about what good news it is for TV and we use it a lot ourselves, but I really am reaching the end of my tether about perpetual, unsolicited, meaningless ‘facts’ being emailed to me…
From: Someone in social media
Subject: Social media’s got some big numbers
Stop what you’re doing, you attractive media person you! Here are the big numbers in social media you need to know in this hour…
A trillion – Number of linkylikeyshareyclicks for something. Impressive isn’t it? Please RT.
About 50-60 – Number of unsolicited emails a day that you get from social media companies or about social media events.
0.5 – Average number of useful facts in the unsolicited emails about social media
5,983 – The number of ‘fans’ the official Numberwang Facebook page has – a drop of 8 fans since the last email we sent you an hour ago. Might this have something to do with Facebook eliminating fake ‘likes’??
83 – The number of clicks the average cat makes a year by trying to catch and eat your desktop mouse, according to new research by MouseyCat.
99% – The percentage of social media gurus who agree that a brand being inactive on social channels makes them look like they’re cowardy-custard stick-in-the-muds living in the past and using, like, Nokia 5110s or something!
6 – Number of exclamation marks in this email!
That’s all for now! See you in 60!
